Malas for manifestation

The sweet surrender of synchronicity never fails to humble and amaze me.

I recently traveled through the midwest and Colorado. My first morning in Denver, while perusing my favorite blog MindBodyGreen over my morning coffee, I stumbled down the link wormhole and found myself on the LA-based yogi-coaching hub Rock Your Bliss.

I found an interesting tidbit about malas – a topic I had always been intrigued about – when a sentence in th post made me take pause; “if you happen to visit Denver, Colorado this year, check out Sarita from Tibet Imports and schedule a {vedic} reading with her”.

I thought it was an odd “coincidence”, but Denver is a large city, so I doubted this place was anywhere near me. I followed the link, and as it happens, I was 1.6 miles away.

I couldn’t NOT go.

I made it there in 10 minutes. The small, unassuming shop was packed with mystical items and thousands of malas of every color and stone you could imagine. $55 gets you a 10 minute Vedic astrology reading with a 108-count mala customized to align with your chart and intentions.

Mala beads are a meditation tool historically used by Buddhists and Hindus to count mantras {}. They usually consist of 108 beads, a guru bead and tassel which symbolizes completion and enlightenment. Wrist malas typically have 27 beads. When using it for mantras or affirmations, you would usually start with the bead above the guru and recite the mantra as you move through all beads on the strand.

According to my astrologist Sarita, Vedic astrology is slightly different than Western by its emphasis on the rising sign rather than the sun sign. Usually the configurations in your chart are about one sign behind than Western astrology. So if the moon is in Pisces, in Vedic astrology it will be in Aquarius.

The reading was fascinating and I though I hate to admit it because I’m a Western astrology loyalist, it was uncannily accurate and answered many questions lately on my mind.

After the reading, Sarita selected about six malas in the shop for me to choose from, stating I would be drawn to the right one for me. I picked a lovely blue-green Amazonite mala whose smooth beads resembled tiny Earths. Amazonite is connected to healing, prosperity and confident communication aligned with integrity and empowerment. According to Crystal Vaults.

The mantras used with mala beads are typically Sanskrit, but I love to gather wisdom from anywhere inspiration strikes and incorporate it into my own spiritual practice. Mantras can seamlessly be replaced with affirmations. The repetition and focus of using the mala will pack an extra powerful punch into your affirmation practice for reprogramming your subconscious and manifesting your heart’s desire.

Spring Energy Clearing

With Spring beckoning, this is a perfect time for cleansing and refreshing the energy in your home. I found this Space Clearing Ritual in The Good Energy Book by Tess Whitehurst – which I’ve condensed for simplification purposes.

  1. Open all windows. Remove all exposed food/drink/pet food
  2. Make a clearing mist with 20 drops peppermint essential oil and 40 drops Rosemary essential oil.
  3. Pick up a sage bundle
  4. Place sea salt on a plate with a tea light candle in the center.

  1. Starting in the center of your home (for most, that would be your living room) light the candle and place the plate of salt in the center of the room. Circling about the room, clap your hands being sure to include corners and closets to draw out the stagnant “old” energy.
  2. Light a bundle of sage and move counterclockwise to purify the stagnant energy.
  3. Spray the room with the peppermint and rosemary clearing mist moving in a clockwise direction.
  4. Repeat in each room of your home until finished.
  5. Extinguish the candle and flush the sale down the toilet.
  6. Shower and cleanse with lavender salt scrub.
  7. Eat carbohydrates and drink 16 ounces of water.

Namaste, loosely translated means “the divinity within me bows to the divinity within you”. I am fond of this word because it captures the very essence of recognizing and honoring the divinity – the soul – in all living beings.

Whispering Namaste and bringing my hands in yogic prayer to my third eye, I have created a simple ritual for honoring the life force of creatures both big and small. “Namaste” I whispered to the little oak barely surviving in the drought-stricken, hard, dry earth this past summer. “Namaste” I whisper to the one-legged bird who is trying to keep up with the rest of the flock, “Namaste” I whisper to myself when my perfectionism kicks into overdrive and I feel like I’m failing when I can’t do it all… Namaste is gracious and kind, the soul food that can feed us all

Cloutie Wishing Tree

The British Isles are full of magical places rife with fairy lore. Many of these places are marked with Cloutie trees where it is custom to tie a ribbon or cloth to the tree and make a wish.

Cloutie Tree on the Hill of Tara, Ireland

Cloutie Tree on the Hill of Tara, Ireland

While visiting the UK, I was lucky enough to stumble upon a Cloutie tree and was enchanted by all the colorful ribbons full of hopes and wishes fluttering in the wind. I tied on my own ribbon and my wish came true two months later… Since then, I always intended to make a Cloutie or Wishing Tree of my very own.

I finally got to it, and this spectacular Azalea seemed perfect for fitting the job. With Valentine’s Day approaching, I tied white, pink and red ribbons to its delicate branches. My family and I wrote the wishes on bits of folded paper and pinned to each ribbon. Wishes for 2016, wishes for family and friends, wishes for our dear imperiled Earth are all now fluttering on my perfect little Cloutie tree. My daughter was enchanted with the project so now I think we’ve just found a lovely annual tradition!

80 Acres Lavender Balm for Sleep

The chaos of day-to-day life can make it difficult to unwind at night. Even when you’re physically exhausted, it can be impossible to turn off your racing mind. I created a simple ritual, which once instilled as a habit, my body now automatically recognizes the relaxation cues. I light my Green Gamine Lavender candle aligned with the energy of serenity, drink a warm cup of peppermint tea and dab a little Lavender body balm on my collar bone. The sweet, pure scent of lavender instantly soothes me and carries me away to a distant escape… a lavender field in Provence, perhaps?

Turns out, I don’t have to travel that far, even in my dreams.  80 Acres Lavender Olive Oil Body Balm is produced at the Mcevoy Ranch Estate in Petaluma, CA. It is certified organic product containing Beeswax, Olive Oil and lavender grown, pressed and produced on the farm. Take that, Provence! (Just kidding, I still love you)

21 Days to Master Affirmations

By now it should be pretty obvious I’m an affirmation enthusiast. I can personally attest to the power affirmations hold in positively transforming your life. One of my all-time favorite books devoted to affirmations is 21 Days to Master Affirmations by Louise Hay. Hay is one of the forerunners of the self-empowerment and Law of Attraction dynasties, as well as the founder of Hay House Publishing.

21 Days is a quick, easy and fun read showcasing the central ideas in several of her most popular titles. Research has shown that establishing a habit requires 21 days of practice. Each of the 21 days in this title are broken into chapters starting with an explanation of affirmations and the power they have to transform your life.

Every thought you think and every word you speak is an affirmation. All of your self-talk, your internal dialogue, is a stream of affirmations. You’re using affirmations every moment whether you know it or not. You’re affirming and creating your life experiences with every word and thought.

Hay explains that your beliefs are a result of habitual thinking patterns that go back as far as childhood. She covers everything from self esteem and fearful emotions, to critical thinking and forgiveness; from healing and aging to job success, money and prosperity. The book is packed with exercises to assist in making positive changes in each of these areas.

Affirmations are statements going beyond the reality of the present into the creation of the future through the words you use in the now.

Here are some valuable tips for practicing affirmations taken from the pages of 21 days…

– It is important to always state your affirmations in the present tense. If you start an affirmation with “I am going to” or “I will have” then your desire remains anchored in the future instead of summoning it NOW.

– Always check in with your emotions and let them be your guide. If you maintain a positive outlook, then your affirmation has a fertile environment in which to grow.

– When you catch yourself in a negative thought, redirect your mind by replacing the thought with: This is an old thought; I no longer choose to think that way. Then find a positive thought to replace it as quickly as possible. It can be as simple as, “I am grateful the sun is shining today.”

– Don’t waste time arguing for your limitations. The more you talk about a problem, the more you anchor it into place.

– Avoid sharing your affirmations and desires with non-believers. Their doubt and skepticism can taint the process and shake your belief in your desire being on its way.

21 Days to Master Affirmations can be downloaded to your iPad or Kindle through the iBook and Kindle apps for just $2.99 – a worthy investment in my opinion! This book is a great introduction to the topic for beginners, and a wonderful refresher full of powerful affirmations for pros. If you are interested in learning more about how affirmations influence your subconscious mind, you can read my blog post here.

Choose new thought to think about yourself, and choose new words to tell yourself how magnificent you are and that you deserve all the good things life has to offer.

Pregnancy Survival Essentials List

There are hundreds, if not thousands of baby blogs out there and this is not one of them. But, for the sake of authenticity, I do want this blog to reflect my life experiences. I just had a baby girl three months ago, so I am going to devote a couple posts to covering baby and pregnancy.

Pregnancy isn’t easy, and taking care of your body, mind and spirit for nine+ months while your body creates a person is essential. I put together my survival list of what helped me cope with my rapidly expanding body and pregnancy-induced afflictions. Whether you are a mama-to-be or know one, this is a great list of resources and gift ideas. So here is my list of what helped me survive 41 weeks of pregnancy.

Gummy prenatal vitamins
When you are growing a little person it is absolutely essential to get your fill of nutrients. I had morning sickness my entire first trimester and couldn’t keep my vitamins down. These gummy prenatals actually did the trick and they taste like candy. These ones have DHA and folic acid which is key for baby’s brain development. I’ve had some hardcore nutrition junkies deny the legitimacy of gummy vitamins, but I’ve got the shiny, long pregnancy hair and healthy baby to prove it. So I still take them!

Alba Botanica Cocoa Butter Body Lotion
I didn’t get any stretch marks during my pregnancy – and I gained 40 pounds! I don’t think luck or genes had anything to do with it as I have gotten stretch marks in the past. Once I found out I was pregnant, I diligently slathered my entire body in cocoa butter every single morning after showering. I found that Alba Botanica’s Cocoa Butter Body Lotion worked the best – it was lightweight but hydrating and this organic, paraben, phthalate and sulfate-free brand has superior products I completely trust. Alba does not test on our furry friends in the animal kingdom either!

Prenatal Yoga with Lara Dutta
I have always been pretty active. Not in a “lift weights and hit the treadmill” way, but in a walk 5 miles every day kind of way. With all the water weight I gained, the shortness of breath and edema, exercise was impossible. This pregnancy yoga video saved my life! It was relaxing, rejuvenating and only 28 minutes of pure serenity that makes your body flexible and strong in time for labor.

Pregnancy Day By Day
All the information you could possibly need about the progression of your pregnancy is packed into the best pregnancy reference material on the market. The book provides a week-by-week snapshot complete with vibrant photos and a user-friendly layout with both mama and baby in mind. Every single question I had was answered within these pages.

Coobie Bra

Similar to a sports bra in concept, this one-size-fits-all bra is so comfortable you could sleep in it. As your breast size increases, the bra conforms to your new size. And the very best part, is great control but no uncomfortable (and potentially dangerous) underwire.

Laura Mercier Body & Bath Luxe Quartet
This is the one decadent splurge every pregnant woman deserves. The only cure for the aches, pains and swollen feet of your third trimester is luxurious nightly bath complete with a divine smelling bubble bath, body scrub and lotion. This is a great gift idea for any mama-to-be. And yes, we here at Green Gamine believe nurturing yourself is indeed essential!

Cliche as it is to say it, the torture of pregnancy is completely worth it in the end! My sweet baby girl is the best thing that has ever happened to me!

Lipocils: The secret to long eyelashes

Screen shot 2014-07-18 at 11.04.13 AM

I don’t think there is a woman alive who doesn’t appreciate the value of long, lustrous eyelashes. Some are willing to go to pretty extensive (and expensive) lengths to achieve a luscious fringe around their peepers. Hailed “French women’s best kept secret for over 60 years”, I have been using Lipocils by Talika for a few years and can attest to it’s potency.

For a fraction of what you would pay for Latisse or other topical products, Lipocils not only works, but it works faster than the one month it promises. Safe and gentle, Lipocils is great when applied before mascara and acts as a conditioning base. Brimming with natural ingredients, nettle and horse chestnut stimulate growth and boost circulation to your capillaries, while soy lecithin and apple extract condition your lashes.

This product is cruelty-free and contains no harsh chemicals and is paraben & pthlalates free. You can purchase Lipocils here.

The Power of the Subconscious Mind

Screen shot 2014-07-02 at 10.06.18 AM

If I were to pick a single title that has most inspired me, it would be The Power of the Subconscious Mind by Joseph Murphy. This masterpiece is packed with inspiring messages and uplifting affirmations making this volume a permanent fixture on my bedside table. I read exerts whenever in need of a little (or big) pick-me-up, or if I’m faced with a challenge where the solution evades me.

Joseph Murphy was a student of Ernest Holmes who wrote the new thought classic Science of Mind. Though he doesn’t provide a scientific explanation of precisely what the subconscious mind is (luckily I have HERE) he does offer simple and fun techniques for harnessing subconscious mind power. I must caution that Murphy was Catholic in his early years so there are a few references applying these theories to Catholic doctrine. Sometimes his writing and manner of expression are choppy and old fashioned. But overall, these are minor flaws that don’t really detract from the incredible life-changing messages of the book.

One of my favorite aspects of the book is the brief summary of key points at the end of each chapter. Murphy covers everything – from love and money to career and addiction. I think the best way to illustrate the highlights is to pull a handful of quotes from the text – so enjoy!

“You think with your conscious mind, and whatever you habitually think sinks down into your subconscious mind, which creates according to the nature of your thoughts.”

“It is a universal truth that whatever you impress on your subconscious mind is expressed on the screen of space as condition, experience and event.”

“Health is the truth of your being. When you affirm health, harmony and peace for yourself or another, and when you realize these are universal principles of your own being, you will rearrange the negative patterns of your subconscious mind based on your faith and understanding of that which you affirm.”

“It is your right to be rich. You are here to lead the abundant life and be happy, radiant and free. You should therefore have all the money you need to lead a full, happy and prosperous life.”

“All frustration is due to unfulfilled desires. If you dwell on obstacles, delays and difficulties, your subconscious mind responds accordingly and you are blocking your own good.”

“If you are wondering about the answer to a problem, try to solve it objectively. If no answer comes, turn it over to your subconscious mind prior to sleep and the answer always comes. You do not always get the answer overnight. Keep on turning your request over to your subconscious until the day breaks and the shadows flee away. You delay the answer by thinking it will take a long time or that it is a major problem. Your subconscious has not problem, it knows only the answer. Believe that you have the answer now. Feel the joy of the answer and the way you would feel if you had the perfect answer. Your subconscious will respond to your feeling.”

Green Gamine’s handmade artisan candles are more than just a lovely aromatic indulgence to enhance your home. Each candle comes with a positive affirmation designed to trigger the power of your subconscious mind. If you are not familiar with affirmations and their benefits, please read on to learn how the subconscious mind functions and how affirmations tap that power.

The human brain has a conscious mind and subconscious mind. Your conscious mind reasons, processes new experiences and learns new skills. When you think and communicate, you are using your conscious mind.

Your subconscious mind is the part of your mind that records information and establishes habits and new skills. Your subconscious mind gives you the ability to breathe, walk, ride a bike and drive a car without thinking. Basically, once a skill is learned with your conscious mind, your subconscious is programmed to perform the skill on autopilot.

{Photo credit:}

Your subconscious mind has a RAS – which stands for reticular activating system – that acts as a doorway to the mind. The RAS filters information around you both familiar and unfamiliar. Once the RAS has filtered the same information multiple times, it recognizes a pattern. Once the RAS identifies a pattern, it create a superhighway with a new network of neurons.

{Photo credit}

Once a superhighway is created, you don’t even have to use your conscious mind anymore – it becomes automatic – much like riding a bike. Here is the kicker: Your conscious mind processes 2,000 bits of information every minute. Your subconscious processes 4,000,000 bits of information. It is inconceivable to consider everything you are picking up around you at every moment without even realizing it. And the only things that you are noticing, are the neural pathways your RAS has already established.

{Photo credit}

So if you are seeing the same negative patterns continuing to show up in your life, your subconscious has most likely created a neural superhighway leading you straight back to the things you don’t want – poverty, failed relationships, poor health and unfulfilling jobs – only because you have developed a pattern.

Screen shot 2014-07-03 at 11.42.34 AM

{Photo credit}

If your subconscious is processing 4,000,000 bits of information each minute it means your subconscious is witnessing positive events too – evidence of good fortune, abundance, happiness, health, peace and love – but your psycho cybermetic set point is filtering it out because the neural pathway hasn’t been established.

{Photo credit}

A new neural pathway or superhighway must be created. There are many techniques for doing this, one of those being affirmations.

By consistently repeating affirmations you can create a new neural pathway over time. Affirmations should always be stated in the present tense because your subconscious does not know the difference between past, present or future. Your subconscious doesn’t think or reason because that is your conscious mind’s job.

By reciting an affirmation such as “I shine with success and good fortune” in the present tense, your conscious mind will probably resist if it is not true in that moment. But, as long as that message is getting to your subconscious, ultimately through repetition you are going to program your subconscious to believe that it’s true. Your subconscious only supports your conscious mind once it has made a decision. Affirmations are best if they are short and concise – easier for your conscious mind to process and hence easier for your subconscious mind to create a new positive superhighway.
